Arriving in what must have been gale force winds on the top of a hill just outside Sheffield, the boys were coaxed out of the changing rooms onto the pitch.(not without the odd grumble or two!)
With Timperley starting out shooting into the uphill goal, it was difficult to warm up and adjust to the conditions and the team shivered until Sheffield scored the first goal within the first five minutes of the match. This was the provocation the team needed to overcome the conditions and we went on to score two goals in the first quarter. Play was very slow and the ground balls were lost in the turf often disappearing completely from view. When the ball was picked up many passes were lost as the wind diverted the trajectory of the ball!
If the game was to be won on possession Sheffield would be in the next round of the cup. They held the ball for most of the 2nd Quarter but our defence kept them from scoring. When we did get the ball we were rushed and did not settle into any pattern and we missed the goal on a couple of occasions. Each side scored one goal in the quarter with the half time score being 3-2.
The third quarter was very similar to the second and play was very stilted, often the ball was lost in a scrum of boys all scrabbling for the ball. When we did manage to grasp the ball we were more successful in scoring with the two further goals for Timperley in the quarter.
By the fourth quarter the players were worn down by the wind and hilly pitch but struggled on successfully scoring another three goals to give a final score of 8-3.
Not the most exciting cup match but in the challenging circumstances a good win.
