Timperley U13 Girls Win First Game of the Season

Timperley welcomed Cheadle U13 to TLC on a bright Sunday morning. The weather played its part and a good game was in prospect, as both teams were looking to gain experience for their younger players.

Covid restrictions have hit teams hard this season so far, and as a result Cheadle could only field 9 players. Timperley with a squad of 13 (thanks to a late goalie cry answered by the multi-talented Katie Tighe), decided to lend 2 players per quarter to Cheadle so that a full 10-a-side game could be enjoyed.

And what a game it was! Knowing Cheadle had a young U13 side, we began by lending Cheadle two of our strong players, Kit and Henny. This put the Timperley team under pressure from the start.
But Timperley quickly proved that they were up to the challenge, with an incredibly engaging 1st quarter. Great efforts from our defensive line of Matilda Lee, Georgina Murphy, Lauren Fazal and Charlotte Sadler saw us keep the strong attacking play under control. Some great saves from Katie Tighe kept us competitive at the start. Katie would keep that form throughout the game and despite being a very capable outfield player, proved to be a great asset in goal today.

It wasn’t just a case of staying strong in defence. Timperley were quick and effective on the break! Cara Mooney showed a turn of pace in midfield that left the opposition standing, with newcomers Chloe McLaughlan and Mary McGoff showing incredible poise and determination up front. Chloe marking her debut with 2 goals! Sophie Gregory made some great progress today, receiving some in game coaching from Robin, and topping it off by scoring a goal!
Charlotte Sadler showed her versatility with a stint in midfield, stopping some Cheadle attacks in their tracks, and then showing intelligent distribution play. It was great to see some good link-up play between our established U13 players and our newcomers.
Strong and always reliable performances from Emily Porter, Franzi Christian and Henny Peach meant that we were always on top in midfield.
Emily made some great interceptions, Henny's running was as effective in defence as it was with ball in stick and Franzi's movement off the ball was excellent.
Timperley team spirit was great today.

Some conditioned play in Q3 saw our attack play the ball around more and create some great passages of play. It’s so important for this team to learn different ways to approach a game, and hopefully a few things were learned today.
But when you need goals, you need goals, and there's few more prolific than Kit Towers. 9 of the 27 goals came from Kit today! Well done!
Well done to Franzi too for being named MVP by the Cheadle side.

Cheadle send their thanks to all the girls who played in a Cheadle shirt for a quarter today – they really did appreciate the help you gave them and sent their thanks for a truly enjoyable game.
From my perspective, this was a great start. All we could have wished for in our first game.
Yes, there’s plenty to work on, especially our movement in attack and our level of alertness in defence. We'll work on that.

In summary, this is a great group of girls who show lots of potential.
Thanks to Robin for his assistance and to Fab and Mike for refereeing!
