The first of a regular take on Timperley lacrosse, by David Shuttleworth

It has been a week of mixed fortunes for Timperley Lacrosse Club.

Timperley’s Womens team travelled to the Wirral to take on reigning North Champions Oxton in a top of the table clash. In a game which was a great advert for women’s Lacrosse Timperley just could not pull off the win going down to a 15-9 defeat. Pushing for the win Timperley left themselves open to some very effective fast breaks from Oxton which made the final margin greater than the overall play suggested.

Timperley Men’s 1st team travelled to local rivals Brooklands and came away with a convincing 14-6 win. Timperley controlled the early exchanges to take a 6-0 lead by half time. Some transgressions at the start of the 3rd Quarter saw Brooklands pull it back to 6-3 before Timperley recovered their focus to lead 8-4 at the end of the 3rd Q and then pull away in the final period.
Timperley scorers were led by England stars Ollie White with 6 and Jack Brook 3. Other goals came from Ben Fox (2) with singles from skipper and England player Mike Armstrong, James Bates and US star Blake Crossman.
The Timperley defence is developing into solid unit under the leadership of another England player, Tommy Kirkland. Against Brooklands England keeper Tim Blower produced some great saves.
Timperley need to repeat this performance when they meet Brooklands in the 1st round of the Senior Flags.

Timperley A entertained high flying Heaton Mersey A at Stockport Road. Hit by late cry offs Timperley fought hard but came off second best with an 8-14 defeat. Timperley goals came from Rick Cain (4) Tom Flint (2) and James Shuttleworth and Tom Slater one each.

The big disappointment of the weekend was our failure to field a B team against Stockport.

Timperley have aspirations to be the country’s biggest and best club .For that to happen everyone in the club needs to buy into the ambition. Traditional powerhouses , Stockport and Cheadle , are in decline but their prolonged domination has been based on the strength of their reserve teams .

This year Timperley made the difficult decision to drop their C team so hopefully this is only a blip because in the battle to be top dog a B (and C team) is as important as a 1st team. The hardest job in a club is getting the teams out so when you have 18 players for a B team on a Thursday and do not have a team on the Saturday it is not a happy state. Not only does that mean that the players who are available do not get a game but neither do the opposition.
This is big subject and people’s views would be welcome.

Timperley U16A travelled to Norbury in a game which should have been good preparation for this coming Saturday’s J & S semi final Cup game against Poynton. However, Norbury were shorthanded and Timperley lacked focus on a pitch which is always a challenge. An ugly game saw Timperley take a 13-5 victory.

Timperley U16B team produced a very creditable performance when they entertained a strong Mellor side on the Timperley ATP. Timperley were always competitive and the game was closer than the 3-9 score suggested.

Timperley U14 are packed with talent and in a strong and physical Rochdale side (who were recent runners up in the U14 Sixes) they faced a tough challenge in the Centurion Trophy quarter final. In a hard fought game Timperley enjoyed a 12-6 win .
Although not at their best Timperley produced a dominant first two quarters to go into the half time break 5-0 up. They took their foot off the gas after the break and at ¾ time their lead was 6-2. In a tempestuous final period Rochdale kept the penalty time keeper busy and the Timperley attack took advantage to score another 6 goals. Unfortunately, the defence lost focus to concede 4 times .
For Timperley, Gregor Allen in goal made some fine saves. Timperley scorers were Harry Alty (4) , Ed Loveland (3), Will Greaves (2), Marius Robinson (2) and Mason Adams (1).
Next weekend (14th March) Timperley make the journey to Norbury (always tricky) for the semi final.

It has been a disappointing season so far for the U12 teams with the A team not realising their considerable potential and the B team usually facing teams who are older and bigger. Last Saturday was no exception for our teams. The A team travelled over to Sheffield and in a tight game went down to a 10-8 defeat. Timperley goals came from Ewan Ginger (6) and George Jenkins (2) Matt Fazal was outstanding in the Timperley midfield and Joe Tomlinson and George Jenkins very effectively shared the goalkeeping duties.
The B team entertained a much improved Brooklands side who were also much bigger. Timperley never gave up the battle but went down to a 2-18 defeat. The margin would have been much greater had it not been for some great saves from Timperley keeper Tom Allen. Timperley goals came from Owen Shuttleworth and Jim Hartley.
Next Saturday Timperley A and Timperley B (thanks to a B team bye) play each other in the semi final of the U12 Plate. So at least one Timperley team will be appearing in Flags Final Weekend on 25th and 26th April.

The jewel in the Timperley crown is the school coaching programme and the Saturday morning POP and Lax sessions run by Sarah Baron and Di Gill. Every Saturday some 50 children turn up to Timperley to be introduced to the world’s greatest game.
Last Wednesday Di Gill held a very well attended meeting (young players and adults) to set up the arrangements for the 2015-16 season.

The quality of the programme was well illustrated when Timperley schools provided the 4 semi-finalists in the Trafford POP Lacrosse Tournament. Both semi finals were very close with Bowdon Cof E beating Stamford Park and Hale Prep winning against the Willows. Hale Prep beat Bowdon in an exciting final with both teams going forward to the Greater Manchester Finals which will take place at Manchester Univ on 24th March. Stamford Park squeezed past the Willows to take 3rd Place.

A message to all parents and supporters; Cheadle have now stopped providing breakfast sandwiches on a Saturday morning. So Franc’s who do the Timperley catering are now undoubtedly the best around making Timperley definite number one.
