Well done to both Mellor and Timperley for defeating the frost and snow (ok not much of it!) to contest a keenly fought match, the winner of which stood to win the U13s league.
Timperley went into an early 2-0 lead thanks to two great goals from Katie Young. Mellor fought back well, but we managed to preserve that early cushion for much of the game, with strong defensive play, and some fine saves from Niamh in goal. The defensive four of Connie, Charlotte, Emma and Sophie Taylor were a strong unit today.
Our ground balls were much better than usual and the midfield worked hard, exemplified by Ana Green and Elsa Hopley-Catalan’s sterling efforts at d-wing.
The game opened up a little, but not much, in the second half and Timperley kept possession well, before Alice Allan chipped-in with two goals in quick succession (to make 3 in total for Alice) to provide a bit more breathing space.
It was tough in attack today as Mellor have a really good midfield and defence, but we kept looking for space and putting the Mellor defence under pressure. Sophie Hurlstone, Jess Haywood and Henny Wright added a goal each, and (Elena Simpson, Zofia Jenkins and Tilly Young all played well and deserved a goal to show for it).
Timperley finished winners by 8 goals to 2, winning the league with a 100% record. All of the girls involved, not just today but in all of the games, should be really proud of themselves. Well done to all of the team and to Fab Johnson for guiding them expertly through.
