U13 Girls vs Mellor - Sunday 15th September 2019
Our brand new U13 girls team took on Mellor in their first game of the season.
It was a tense affair and a very enjoyable game.
The first half was evenly contested, with some great play from both teams.
Q3 proved difficult for us. From a coaching perspective, the girls were doing a lot of things right.
Timperley were trying to pass around the goal and sometimes passes were not being completed.
But key here is the desire to pass and create space. We could have perhaps scored more with a direct approach, but what we witnessed on Saturday was a team learning to play as a team.
In time, passes will complete, become faster, and more goals will come.
The game concluded with a tense 4th quarter, with Timperley piling on the pressure. We got within 1 goal of Mellor before time ran out.
Timperley were in the ascendancy at the end of game. Team spirit was alive and well.
It's only after the game that we reflect on the fact that our entire defensive line are Year 7 girls. They showed huge courage and determination at a young age.
Our team of 12 included 2 goalkeepers.
It's a massive pitch and we had only 3 midfielders, who played almost the entire game.
A special mention for our goalies. They shared time in goal, with both girls turning their hand to play outfield too. Laura battled on despite being injured and had some strong defensive encounters. Charlotte W kept us in the game in Q3, with some fab saves.
Hats off to Charlotte S, Emily and Eva in defence, who consistently drew shouts of admiration from the crowd and coaches. Mellor had some very good ball carriers, but our defensive line stood strong on many occasions.
The endurance shown by Alyssa, Carys, and Franzi was pleasing to see. Lacrosse is a game that relies on strong fitness levels. They ran their socks off all morning.
In attack we also a young lineup. Daisy and Kit looked comfortable at U13 level, and Esme provided the experience, composure and class. A special mention for Sophia, who was not only playing her first Timperley game, but one of her first EVER games of lacrosse.
She performed exceptionally well, with some confident ball collection and accurate passing. A very positive start!
The girls need to now move forward now, continuing to develop their play in exactly the way they were trying to, but with the determination and fight that they showed in that 4th quarter.
As a first outing for a new U13 team, we'll take that! They are a young team, and as they grow together, they will become better and better. Thanks to Mellor for an entertaining encounter, played in good spirit. Well done girls!
